The Mott Families of Leeds County, Ontario

 

Brockville, Ontario was called Elizabethtown. The area was first settled by English speakers in 1785, when Americans who had remained loyal to the crown fled to Canada after the American Revolution.

He married Hannah Bailey.

Samuel Mott of Elizabethtown Labourer acknowledged to owe to Our Sovereign Lord the King the sum of twenty pounds. Lemuel Cornwall of Kitley, Yeoman, and Peter Howard of Elizabethtown Gentleman, acknowledged to owe to our Sovereign Lord the King the sum of ten pounds upon Condition that the said Samuel Mott shall be and appear at the next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace to be holden in and for said District and try the Traverse upon the Indictment to which he has now pleaded Not Guilty. ....Bradish Billings, Elijah Adams and James Hide bound in Recognizance in the sum of ten pounds each for their appearance at the next Sessions to prosecute and give evidence against Samuel Mott.

Samuel died about 1805 in Kitley, Leeds County, Ontario.

Edmund and Reuben served in the 1st Leeds Militia during the War of 1812.

Jeremiah Mott was killed in action while fighting with the Leeds County Militia during the War of 1812.

The first European settlements in Ontario were after the American Revolution when 5,000 loyalists left the new United States.

United Empire Loyalists were Americans who remained loyal to King George III and the British Empire. They moved to Canada after the American Revolution.

Reuben Mott was born in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York in August, 1758. His parents were Jonathan Mott and Hannah Bailey.

He was in Jessup’s Rangers.

His first wife was named Hannah.

In 1784 Reuben appeared on the provisioning list for disbanded troops as a member of the Loyal Rangers. He was mustered in Elizabethtown (now Brockville), Leeds County, Ontario.

1797 Elizabethtown census:
Reuben, Judah, Patience, Elizabeth, Lois, Margaret, and Reuben, Jr.

In 1802, Reuben was granted 100 acres in Leeds County.

During the War of 1812, Reuben, Jr. served in the Leeds County Militia.

Reuben died on January 16, 1839.

Dutchess County, New York patriots forced colonists loyal to the British government to flee north into what became Ontario.

 
 
 

The Battle of the Windmill was in November, 1838. Loyalists defeated an invasion attempt by Hunter Patriots, led by  Nils von Schoultz, who were attempting to overthrow British rule. The battle was at a windmill two miles east of Prescott.

Jonathan Mott was born in New York in 1765 to Samuel Mott (1736-1805) and Hannah Price.

He married Eleanor Weeks (1769-1840).

Edmund Mott was born on August 8, 1767 in Duchess County, New York. He married Amy (Emma) Wing.

The Society of Friends (Quakers) began in England in the 1650s, when they broke away from the Puritans. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, as a safe place for Friends to live and practice their faith.

Simon Mott was born in 1776 in Dutchess County, New York. His parents were Samuel Mott and Hannah Price.

Before the American Revolution, the Mott family were Quakers, and after the war they joined the Episcopal Methodist Church in Canada.

Simon married Phebe Lee. Phebe was born in 1785 in Saratoga County, New York.

They moved from New York to Leeds County, Ontario, Canada about 1790.
